Week 4 Question
I was trying to trick you all with the week 3 question by asking for only the advantages of an arranged marriage. I thought you would tell me advantages and disadvantages, but everyone stuck to the question. This week I would like to hear your response to the following question: When you left your home and families and came to study at SAL, in addition to clothing and personal care items, what one or two additional things did you bring with you and why?

When I came to America for studying English like the present, besides clothing and personal care items, the most important thing I would bring with me is my laptop. First, with laptop or computers, I can do homework, prepare my presentation, and survey any information I need on the Internet. Secondly, of course, I can have entertainments by laptop like DVD movies, MP3 music, PC game, and some online news. Finally, laptop bring me convenience of contact with my families and friends who are in Taiwan. Even I can discuss homework with classmates on applications such as Messenger or Google Talk. Therefore, if I can pick only one thing to bring with me except somethings which are daily use, I will choose my laptop.
Everyone who traveled to abroad might feel that their luggage was too heavy. When I came to San Jose, my luggage also was very heavy. However, I brought two present for my friend and my uncle even though I have little space to carry those. The reason is that my friend requested personally to me to bring mp3 player which is only sold in Korea. Also, my parents prepared and gave some mini-ceramic ornaments for my uncle and aunt. Accordingly, I brought these items which are not in U.S. Then, I gave these items to my friend and uncle. They were very thankful for me. Everything I can buy in here, but it’s hard to buy someone’s mind. However, I can express my mind to them through these items. That’s why I brought these items to here when I left Korea.
This is Julia B. I agree with Rick that a laptop is the most important thing that I want to make sure I brought it with me. Not because I can not live without a Chinese OS (system), it just more convenient to communicate with my family and my friends through typing messages on msn or send letters in my own language. The other thing I did make sure I brought here is my family photo album. Inside of it have all the pictures I took with my family and friends. I truly believe that no one can live a lone without their own family support, and the family pictures give me strength to get through some difficult times. Others additional items like a Chinese novel, cook books and gifts from friends are all helping me to relax after school.
Also for me, laptop is the most important thing that I brought to America. The main reason is for contacting with my friends in Korea. Even if we are in long distance, we can communicate often through msn and homepages. Second thing what I brought is digital camera. I want to take picture of my life in US because I want to memorize. Therefore I usually take picture my friends and scenery of US. When I go back to Korea, I'll memorize my life in US through camera.
When I decided to leave my country, it was difficult to determine because I should give up my important thing, such as job. At that time, I only had some clothes, personal belongings, and books in my two trunks. In addition, I brought one important thing, that is a photo album. This photo album is the most important thing now. It has a precious, delightful, and lasting memory in my life. It sometimes helped me. Particularly, my wife's pictures cheer me up. Of course, we live together in Amercia now. We will make other memories together here. Then, we will fill many beautiful pictures in our own album.
As everyone agreed, I agree that a laptop was most important thing to bring when I came to the U.S.. Before I came here, I did't have a laptop, so I bought this one for coming here. Moreover, I bought some present such a Korean style because I wanted to give those to my homestay family, so I prepared some korean mask and accessaries. It was nothing special, but it was enought to impress them that I really wanted to be your friend. If you go aborad, I recommend to bring something kind of souvenir.
I think the other important things to be are the laptop and pictures when I left my country to SAl. The first thing, laptop,are necessarily carried by most people when they need to study or work, especially in the such far country. Besides studying, the laptop also can use to communite with my family or friens without expensive charge. I can send my pictures to share with them. In addition, I use the laptop to download some musics to be entertainment or see the news on internet to relieve my homesick. Moreover, the second things I bring is pictures. I think people going to a strengh place usually feel alone, so to see the picture is a good way to relax the homesick and notice oneself what will do in feature. In short, the laptop and pictures are my important thing in this strength country.
In my case, the highest priority is also laptop. Not only I can communicate with my family and friends by MSN but also it is useful to do homeworks.Therefore, Laptop is helpful to succeed to my American life. In addition, hot pack for my jaw problem is the second important thing. I have to be careful about the problem, and I have to do fomentation everyday. In these reasons, laptop and hot pack are important to bring with me to live in America.
When I came to America, I took a lot of things. I took five pieces of baggage. Before I prepared my baggage, I asked my friends, who had been in foreign countries, what I needed to take. They told me that I needed to prepare bedding by myself if I wanted to live in campus’ department. I also needed to take my clothes for the season at that time in California. Therefore, I used one trunk for putting the bedding, two trunks for putting the clothes for every season and one trunk for putting every thing that I would use in the first weed after I arriving America because I thought I didn’t have time for shopping in the first week and everything in America was very expensive. In addition, I need to prepare the IBT TOFEL test, so I took one truck for books about the test and an English-English Dictionary. I think you will be amazing that how I can take so many trucks here. They are definite overweight. The reason is that my father asked one of his friends, who was Singaporean and didn’t need American visa, came with me and we separated the trunks.
Two special objects what I brought in America are a ring from my mother and a bible, the Message. To begin with, the ring means to me a mind of mother who send his son abroad and a desire that she want me accomplish what I will finish to do. When I have seen this ring, I have reminded the purpose why I am in the USA. Unfortunately, my finger is too big to wear this ring, so I used a chain to make a necklace included in the ring. Therefore I can wear this ring as a necklace. In this sense, the ring is very important to me. The other is a bible that was written by Eugene H. Peterson, who is one of the best people who have transcribed the bible. Before I went to American three days ago, I just knew about the message. Thus, I tried to buy the book to read in the USA for studying English. Therefore, I could get the book and I have read the book since I bought this. It has helped me not only understand the bible, but also study English because it is written by English. For this reason, I am always with the bible and read it. To wrap up, there are two things which I think these are my precious materials; the ring and the bible.
Actually, this is my first time here in US, and also the first time that I have to be so far away from my country and my family for a long time. Therefore, when I came here, I brought some of my important stuffs with me for many reasons. First of all, my laptop was the first choice of mine because it was one of the most important electronic devices for daily basis. For instance, using the laptop to contact to others via the Internet is very simple, helpful and convenient. Therefore, I can contact either my family or my friends so easily and any time as well. Furthermore, when I’ve been here for studying, it’s quite necessary for me to have my own computer for doing lots of works. In addition, for other belonging, I chose to bring some of my favorite and helpful books also, such as a cook book, a dictionary, an English Practice book, etc. In my opinion, they’ve been very useful to me because most of them are in my language. So, I can easily use and understand them as well. Finally, the last stuff was my digital camera because I would see many interesting and new things over here. Actually, I can keep all of my impressive memories through those pictures which help me remind not only beautiful places but also great people. Then, after I have some terrific pictures, I can share them to others, especially to my family and my love ones.
What will I bring with me to study in Sal instead of clothing and personal care? My first choice would be my laptop because I can use my laptop to do my school work and finding information on any research project. The most important part is I can use it to contact my friends and family, which could cost less money than to make a phone call. It is can cost less money, but also can use it instantly to contact people. I can use my laptop to upload my pictures on the internet to share it with my friends and family and I can write my daily journal in my blog. Besides my laptop, I will bring my bracelet that has given from my grandmother. I wore my bracelet since high school. When I wore it I will remember my grandmother, she always says I should study hard and be careful my safety. Therefore, when I see my bracelet, it could remind me what my grandmother said. For those reason, my laptop and bracelet would be two things that I think which is very important for me.
It was my first time that I leave my country. I was nervous and didn’t know what I need to live other countries. I packed my trunk carefully. I brought pictures of my family and friends and an alarm clock addition to clothing and personal care items. First of all, whenever I miss my family and friends, I can see their pictures. To see the pictures makes me comfortable. If I feel homesick, I can reduce loneliness by seeing the pictures. Moreover, I brought an alarm clock, because I want to keep my timetable in America. If I live by regular plan, I don’t waste time. This is helpful for me to study English.
When I took part in the conversation club, we made a discussion about the same topic. Similarly, most people think laptop get the highest priority because it so convenient. First of all, I can use laptop to do my homework. For example, even though some teachers can accept handwriting, many teachers still what students type their homework. By the way, how can I do this homework with out laptop? In addition, I can communicate with my friends and my parents by using msn and skype. Some people may say that why did I use cell phones? Although not only using laptop but also using cell phones can connect with others, I can save money by using laptop. Furthermore, in my leisure time, I usually use laptop to gets some news, download some files. In brief, laptop is so important for me to study abroad. This is why I bring it to here.
